95gts...car looks great! Just so you know, in these pictures the car is already "clear coated". It is a common misconception that clear coat is like some kind of invisible force field that is applied as a final step. Clear coat is really just clear paint. A lot of people think that clear coat is something more than that. When a car is painted, after primers and sealers a base coat is applied to the car. The base coat is the "color coat", and is very dull. After a couple of base coats, the car is sprayed with a couple of coats of clear coat, which provides the shine and adds depth to the color. The base coat itself has absolutely no shine to it. Wet sanding and buffing are the final steps which knock off any dirt nibs and "orange peel" to smooth out the paint finish.

Vary true Redrider, thats how most of the paint jobs are done today, wow a girl thats up on here paint!! years ago back in the 80s I remember using (single stage paint)straight enamel, and hardener, the harder would make the paint dry quicker so it will retain the shine also harden the paint. My 53 Plymouth was painted the old way single stage enamel. also I remember using lacquer based paint, and having to buff and buff . Also learned not to spray lacquer over enamel primer, I always like the look of a lacquer paint job when buffed out.

The trick with base/clear is that you can't wait more than a couple days (this varies by paint manufacturer) before spraying the clearcoat onto the base. If you wait too long, it won't stick. A collision shop did that to my daughter's car, and when she washed it the clearcoat washed off with the hose in large chips! When I painted mine, I didn't take any chances and applied the clear immediately after the basecoat was dry enough. My only regret is that I only used 2 coats. 3 would prolly have been better, then I could wetsand it a little more (to get the orange peel out) and buff without the fear of breaking through to the basecoat. Once that happens, you can't just put more clear down or you'll have a spot........you have to paint the whole panel. ;D Joe.......how many coats of clear is he applying to yours?

That's good. It looks like he's doing a real good job. The tough part about painting a car, unless it has a vinyl top or it's a convertible, is that it's important to spray around the car keeping a wet edge as you go. Your car is similar to mine because the roof is connected to both rear sides, and that's not easy to do unless you have a lot of experience painting cars. (I've only painted a whole car 3 times) I prolly have 3 or more coats of clear in some spots and only 2 in others. Spraying clear is tough, because it's really hard to see it as it's going on and it's too easy to put on too much and make a drip. Like Redrider said, some orange peel with urethane is normal, and in order to get a perfectly smooth finish he might have to wet sand it and buff it out after it's dry. Your car looks great Joe.......and that color is perfect for a Mustang!

Thanks Joe, he will wetsand and buff it. This guy has gone above and beyond what I would have done so far. If it has a couple flaws thats fine by me, it gives it that human touch. But he been painting for 25 years, and really going thru everything so far. Color wise, I always wanted this color, never thought I ever get it, so it feels good..
