I graduated from school in 1979, most of the kids were driving muscle cars back and forth to school and used as daily drivers, some of these cars were in rough shape but anyway,
Jocks seemed to like the Dodge Challangers
book heads drove VW bugs
cool guys drove any jacked up in the rear 2-door GM, roadrunner, or charger. Fords were really out not as cool as GM, although 1 guy had an awesome black 2-door 65 Ford Falcon
girls drove mustangs, mustang II was the chicks favorite and yes the camaro and firebird all were chick cars
Nerds drove 4-doors, station wagons and Mopars
pick-ups were driven my male loners or hard workers

When I was in high school, the working class kids drove anything that didn't cost much over $100.00 or like Benny says, what you could boost ( LOL). Muscle cars were only then arguably being invented. And yes, later on the Mustangs and Camaros were almost strictly chick cars. The first vehicle I owned was a '36 Chevy Coupe. It went through a number of engine upgrades until one afternoon I ran into a very large maple tree. That was not good. I was a drag racing "rock" back then; DA haircut and all. Just after HS, I got to driving a 1949 Dodge 3/4 ton pick-up that I had beefed up with a 331 Chrysler hemi. I recall that I had liberated the hemi from a wrecked 1954 New Yorker. The Dodge's rusty fenders would flap in the breeze but she was fast (for the time). None of my cars were ever chick automobiles. No Daddy's cars either!

you guys are right, I also drove what ever I can get, almost all mopars, my dad would find the mopars, he was strictly mopar, my first project car was a 61 Chrysler Newport with a 361 engine, and fins, we rebuilt the engine and I gave it a electric spray gun black paint job, dad junked it on me because I ignored it when I started see chicks

First car for me was a 53 Pontiac. Straight 8, with 3 on the tree. This for my Junior year. That was in 1973. Car stuck out like a sore thumb, everyone knew where I was. By senior year I had a 64 Thunderbird. A red one. During my senior year I pieced together the 66 Coronet enough to get it on the road for graduation day. My class, class of 74, had one chick with a Mach 1, a guy with a 383 Chrarger, A Cobra Torino, and one guy I knew who had a Corvair. Other classmates cars were pretty much not memorable as they were nothing special. Class of 73 though was full of Muscle..............
