I`m suprised my car ran, I always change my fuel filter, I noticed my 65 Barracuda was starting hard, and my floats were sticking in my carb. I noticed my clear fuel filter had crap in it, this is what I found, after changing the filter and the plugs the car runs strong, just have the floats sticking in the carb, I plan on rebuilding the carb, I have a rebuild kit ordered. my new filter is remaining clean, it takes more then this to kill a 273. I would hate to think someone put a little sand in my tank, I don`t know anyone who would stoop that low. I know that the guys who don`t care from me on the other forum would never do anything like that, this stuff is not done by car people, its done by ass holes.

Did you replace the tank when you did the car? If not that is simply rust from the tank. Occasional use of dry gas to get the water out of the bottom will help.
If that tank was replaced, then it is rust from the gas you bought. Pumps do have filters, but I wonder how often they really get changed. A lot of in ground tanks are old metal units, and they get dirt and grit from the tanker trucks, the main storage tanks, and a lot of other places along the route the gas takes from the refinery to your tank. A lot starts out as metal particles that turn to rust with the moisture in the tank, not necessarily a rusty tank itself.

If you never changed the tank, or removed it and cleaned it out. its now what 443 years old?
And that car was probably sitting quite awhile before you re-did it?
Nothing overly unusual then. Just kep an eye on the filter this season, and carry a spare.
I've had bouts with old gas tanks now and agan. Goes with the territory.........

If the stuff was abrasive, maybe like giving your motor a porting job!
