I would imagine one of the parts that go with it is the vin number...........and paperwork. convert an old slanty car with this, and you have a counterfeit............

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......... Don't ask, Don't tell!!!!! Actually you know as well as I do that the vin number from a high dollar muscle car has found its way onto a base line model once or twice........... 20 years ago I've seen rusted out hulks hauled out of a swamp that were sold for big bucks for the paperwork. Just last year a Challenger T/A was for sale in Carlisle for $5000..........only thing salvageable was the vin # and the paperwork. Ever seen the Original Gone in 60 seconds? ? Very controversial at the time because the first segment was a how-to on stealing a car and changing over the vin etc...........

somthing to think about on this subject..and I'm on the fence about it ..BUT...it seems ok to rebuild/replace all the rotted/junked parts/panels on a car with a special vin, but to change the vin on another car in good condition, that has everything the vin has, is illegal. I'm assuming the vin tag or any car is not stolen. Why is this ??b TooMe, it's just replacing one part.

well now that I think about it, I don't know if its illegal for this guy to sell the vin plate, only illegal if used, but I guess the benifits out weigh the risks, who is going to check the stolen car list for a 72 Duster?

The guy is up to $285.00 with 29 bids and the auction does not end until the 8th! Who knows how high it could go? I think you are right Ray, how many people will look for a stolen 72 Duster?

Well, actually it is illegal to possess a vin number if it is not attached to a car. Charge is something l;ike, "Illegal possession of a vin number". And it certainly is illegal to switch them. Felony...........
Street rodders for years have used vin numbers of a model A to register a plastic street rod. Boyd Coddington got into real trouble doing that, but it also extended into tax evasion there.

If you own a special interest car and it is totaled. Why is it a felony to have the vin in the garage or in a dresser drawer ?? Why is it a felony to possess your own vin number ?? AND, if you own another vehicle, that is registered, How can You get whacked for tax evasion. It's ok to switch all 4 fenders/qtrs but not a vin. Does this make sense. What about the guy at barrett Jackson who sold the re-bodied satellite???

Does this mean I can sell all of the impala, and chevelle tags I have? In the early years Steve was a big vendor at swap meets... I know for a fact that the tags and registrations I have all came from cars that were totally dis mantled and are long gone.. he use to buy them up cheap, tear them apart and sell the parts...7 months pregnant I was in the trunk of a 65 impala ss with screwdriver in hand taking anything off that I could..He saved all of the tags, registrations etc, Jr put them all together, nice and neat labeling all what they came off of..I remember years ago at swap meets when the vendors could sell these type of things, but not anymore. yee ha ebay here I come!!!

What about the guy at barrett Jackson who sold the re-bodied satellite??? Simply put, it is against the law as a theft deterant. One of the reasons they have the vin # held on by those "special" rivets, which by the way you can buy as well, though they are not supposed to be sold to the general public. On a lot of MOPARS, the vin is attached to the dash pad. dash pad wears out you find a replacement and have to switch the vin. Boyd got whacked for the tax evasion because he was undervaluing the cars by using the old vin numbers and reporting the cars values 10's of thousands of dollars less than what he was really selling them for.

Maybe thats the furture of restoring cars. restore them to what ever the vin you can dig up for a car, build to vin specs
reminds me a pushy vender that was at the Niagara o4 show selling titles for cars, I was looking at the titles he came over to me and asked what car I had, I told him a 53 Plymouth he said hold on. he went in his trailer and came out with a 53 plymouth title, he said here this will work $50, I told him I don't need it my car is on the road, boy did he get annoyed with me, lol

FOUND THIS ABOUT VIN NUMBERS ON A WEB SITE
Types of VIN Scams
* VIN Switch: Thieves use VIN switching to disguise the identity of a stolen vehicle. They will replace the VIN on a stolen vehicle with a VIN that is not recorded as stolen. The thief will then try to resell the stolen car to an unsuspecting customer. Some VIN switchers will also create fraudulent titles and registrations to go along with the vehicle. * Salvage Switch: A vehicle that is extensively damaged, burned, or stripped, and determined not to be eligible for repair is called "salvaged." Thieves use phony identification to buy a salvaged vehicle just to obtain the title and the VIN. Then, they go out and steal a car that is the same make and model, and switch the VIN plates. The thieves then claim that the stolen car is in fact the salvaged one that is rebuilt, register the vehicle using the phony identification information, and then resell it to an innocent purchaser. * Strip and Run: This is another scam that thieves use to disguise a stolen car. In this situation, a car thief steals a car, strips it for the parts, then abandons it. Eventually, police recover the vehicle and cancel the theft record. The thieves purchase the vehicle’s frame at an insurance or police auto auction and then re-attach the parts they stole from the car, resulting in a car that is no longer listed as stolen.

Maybe that vin on ebay isn`t stolen, its the vin plate that makes that duster a 340 car, the lure of $$$$$$
here is an example: its like putting a 340 in a duster that came with a slant 6, changing the vin and selling it to Benny for top dollar, lol
