I like to try one in the next 5 years, have some ideas. Is it worth all the work, or will I be disappointed? Seems like its a ton of work and the benifit isn't there for most I talk to.

Over the years I have been approached by several organizations wanting to put on a show or cruise. They all see it as a way to make money, and have fun. First thing they usually ask is how much money they can make? I usually tell them they can make a grand or more, or lose a grand or more....................this usually gets their attention, especially if they come into this with NO seed money! First thing is pick a date.........hopefully one that does not conflict with too many other events in the area. To "play by the rules" select a date and get it on the clutch artists calendar in January. Free advertising, and hopefully scheduling that does not conflict with someone close by. Personally, seeing as I do this, I just hate it when people come along scheduling things late and stepping on other peoples events. Do you have a location? (Free hopefully), insurance? Helpers? Does the town require a permit?
Got money for a DJ, advertising flyers, dash plaques, awards?
Is this a club..........suprise! 70% of members will not lift a finger to help! They will tell you that is not why they joined a club. Doing it for a fire company? Maybe fine if you are one of them, but if you are not you will find that there will be those that resent you and will bitch about even feeding you at the event for all of your help. I know one group that put on a show for years for a youth group. They now make more money wrapping Christmas gifts at a shopping plaza during December.
Do it for the love of the hobby, do it for the abuse, someone will criticize no matter what, hopefully you will have a thick skin...............Remember, "No good deed, goes unpunished".
Talk to me more................I can tell you stories.............

Man does Swi have that right! It is alot of work! You also have people telling you how it should be run but no one lifts a finger to help. My suggestion is to find a club that does a good show and offer to help out! Go to the meetings, go with whoever is getting the awards, dash plaques, door prizes, goodie bags, etc... Be prepared for the good and bad comments. Remember that you can't please everyone. Also keep in mind that no matter how well you plan a show it can all be lost to the "Weather Gods".

Bringing up another subject! SPONSORS! If you want a successful show.........all awards should have sponsors, dash plaques sponsored! remember, weather, scheduling, act of God, something can go dreadfully wrong. Maybe some radio station decides to put on a FREE show the same time as yours and advertises it like crazy. If you don't have bills paid for before the show, where's the money come from. One very bad thing though...............if you find a "sugar daddy" someone to sponsor the entire event, with cash to spare.............you may find that he now feels he can decide what the club thinks and what the club stands for. A sponsor who then decides how the club is run........regardless of by-laws. Ask me how I know this................................

Maybe I should look into working a show, more then I do, i only help a couple shows, but nothing major. I like to keep the clubs out, just friends running the show. I have a location I like, but its in Amherst, might be a pain. Is there a better way to judge, like when people register, or pull in, or think it get too backed up. thinking of as you pull in, you get judged, register 9-12 awards at 1:00 Looking for a smaller show, to start. Like to keep the shows small and special, all ford, mopar, chevys, rods, something like that. There are some other different veiws i Like to bring in, just to see the results.

95gts, we would make more money selling chowder, or doing a pancake breakfast, figure in paying the DJ, the food for the day, printing flyers, paying for awards, it seems getting sponsors is getting harder and harder each year, also you can't please everyone, last year I had people complain about the chicken grease getting on there car, this year I had people complain about the chicken being to far away. Also you have to plan about a year in advance right after my past shows I would plan for the next years show a day after, I done this show at Miller Hose because I like this hobby, and we always had 50s dances and cruises at miller hose dating back to the 80s, if it rains or looks like rain you take a big hit, big loss. Also Its only a handfull of people that help, I had guys that had ideas on our show, it seems they can never show up to help on the day of the show, its the same excuses "my pet rocks birthday" or some thing. I wish them good luck next year on the show.

You know what they say...........excuses are like.............everyone has one and they all stink.
Heard them all with shows I've been involved in. Some people just come out and flatly refuse...............others BS, and always have an excuse not to help. Only one thing worse is those that don't even show up with their car because they are afraid someone will ask them to help so they don't even upport the activity.

I agree with what you guys are saying because I have said it myself. Shows are a lot of work but I enjoy being involved with them. All of our members come to the show every year and work their butts off! We only have about 20 members so everyone needs to show up and they do. We also a bunch of helpers who come every year to give us a hand. We could not do it without them either. It is a lot of work throughout the whole year but I feel it is worth it in the end! Hey 95gts, if you would like to help out with The Time Travelers car show at Olcott in September, let me know. It would give you a good idea of what goes on at a show.

I will say that your Olcott show is one of the best shows I see run all year. The best part is you ALL work together. One of the good things is you have limited membership, that way you are not bothered so much by the freeloaders who only join a car club beleiving they have to to get a discount on their collector car insurance.............

yes i would help at a show, to see what goes on more. I usually just help park cars and pick up lol. I beleive you still have my email address. olcott is a cruise. I have a hard time with clubs and local shows for this reason, the stock/modified class. Modified adds HP, not paint and rims. I like to organize three different classes, stock, mod, and custom. Years will be wider margin, but the cars in the class will "fit " the class. it seems like cars are just put in classes where they can't compete. heads, cam, and intake vs- paint rims, and new interior. Also looking at a smaller show, i don't yet know if it be year or brand specific.
Also what does everyone think about being judged as you drive in? Seems easier, just set up 5 places to park and judge them. Since its be a smaller show, should work, if not it would be funny.

I don't think this would be good. I know alot of people that have quite a bit of stuff towards their display or just chairs and coolers in their trunks. Kind of hard to judge a car loaded with stuff and or people.

Yes I did get a dinner from helping at Miller Hose, very unexpected, but nice.
As for drive by judging, not o good idea, as then no-one can properly prep their car. and some people are detail nuts.............
