Erie County is by Far the worst of the two as far as taxes go. Just compare sales tax and that proves the sign wrong.

Actually, as bad as Erie County is, I'm pretty sure our school and property taxes are higher.........makes up for the pennies we save on sales tax...........

I don't think the property taxws are higher overall in Niagara County. Wheatfied has one of the lowest....Pendleton is being taxed to death......I had a property in Buffalo asessed at 27000 and the taxes were almost 2500. Water Bills in Buffalo are outragious..Amherst , Orchard Park are also not cheap places to live. My Brother pays more for his house in cheektawaga than I do...way more....asessed lower also.

I just paid $1.87 per gallon of gas in Dearborn, MI which is only a few miles from Detroit. In New York We are paying 50 to 60 cents a gallon more because of our high taxes. That sucks!

Here's the info I was talking about....................
Free New York Announces Advertising Campaign to Fight High Taxes
Buffalo, New York. January 17, 2006, Free New York will unveil plans for a major advertising campaign to fight the oppressively high taxes in Western New York. Its first salvo, a billboard “welcoming” drivers to Niagara County, which has the highest property taxes in the nation (based on assessed value), will be unveiled on Friday (Jan. 19) at noon near 6701 Transit Rd., Lockport, NY (heading north, near Swimco Pools).
The billboard is based on a recent study by the Tax Foundation of Washington DC, which showed that several of the highest property-taxed counties are in Upstate New York and that Niagara was first!
This billboard will be followed by a 60-second TV ad targeted to Niagara County, then by a similar billboard and TV spot aimed at Erie County residents.
The Transit Rd. billboard was sponsored by Free York, Inc. and made possible by donations from concerned taxpayers in Niagara County. Free New York’s Niagara County Coordinator, Lee Bordeleau, conceived the billboard idea and raised the necessary funds.
Afterwards, there will be a Dutch treat lunch at Pour Boyz, 6241 S. Transit Rd., Lockport.
Free New York, Inc., is a non-profit, non-partisan New York State public policy research corporation. It has offices at 1313 Main St., Buffalo, New York, 14209.
Free New York is the research and policy arm of the Upstate tax revolt.

Last year I extended only 8 feet out on my Garage, a day after I started work on it the building inspector showed up on site, and requested I get a building permit ASAP, I thought I did not need a permit because its an improvement to the garage, so to continue the work I got a building permit now I`m just waiting to see how much my assesment value goes up, it went up by 20k with the addition put on in 2002

I saw that billboard. I also disagree, the taxes on my house in Amherst are about equal to what I pay here, but my property here is 6 times wider and just as deep. The homes are both the same value. Erie county is definitely the worst, that's why we moved to Niagara county. IMHO, the taxes are way too much no matter where you live in this state. I should also add that last year the re-asessment in Amherst raised my assesed property value by 50%. I fought it and it got lowered to 30%, and I just passed the increase on to my tenant, but it still sucks. That was a huge jump. Also......did you know that when your federal income tax refund gets held up, and they pay you interest on what they owe you, that you have to pay tax on that interest the following year? Unbelievable!..........lol
