So my stepson takes his '03 Focus in for inspection. After spending $$ on 4 new tires, and doing the repairs needed to pass, they then proceeded to hook it up to the computer that appeases the gods in Albany. Turns out that 5 sensors are not working, so the car failed. Car runs perfect, always did. The shop isn't sure what the problem really is, and can only promise him a 10 day extension. What good is a car that won't pass inspection even if there's nothing wrong with it? ?? At least a pre-'96 car that's roadworthy can't fail inspection for stupid reasons just because of the corrupt laws in this state. This B.S. is unfair to every resident of this state who already pays more taxes than we can afford. What it all boils down to is forcing people to buy new cars who would normally keep their old one for a few more years. Sounds to me like a bunch of car dealers all got together and stuffed some politicians pockets full of money, and got some laws passed intended to force small garages out of business and force people to get rid of cars that are otherwise perfectly good. What a f'ing system......all I know is until someone comes up with a gadget that will defeat this NYS rip off, I'll never drive ANYTHING built after '95........no matter how bad a rustbucket it is.......even if that means having to drive to Virginia to get one that's rust free next time I need another car. NEW YORK STATE SUCKS!

ouch!! you should of had me clear the senors, with my handy dandy de-coder, just before i get my Jeep inspected I clear all the codes.

I forecasted the small shops and car lots will be gone in 10 to 20 years and a car can only be fixed or bought from a BIG dealer....They do have a provision for a car flunking inspection based on cost to repair. Check that out.

I know some people that say they plan on buying a new car every couple years just to get around this problem. My co-worker is one who said they will not get anything over a 95 so they don't have these issues.

Seriously, there are plenty of GOOD old cars out there for a cheap amount of money. Say for instance my 62 Valiant that when I purchased it I paid $2000 for it. Now I have put money into it to make it a cruise night car by getting rechromed bumpers etc. But considering what I paid for it, I could have just as easily driven it back and forthe to work year round as a daily driver...........no payments, minimal cost for insurance, any mechanical thing goes wrong I can fix it. Yes there are no bells and whistles, no air, power windows, door locks, brakes, heated seats, not even power steering. Car gets over 20mpg and turns heads and there are plenty of other cars out there for that price. Chevelle and Nova 4-doors, cars from the 70-s and 80s.
My main winter vehicle is a 98 Subaru legacy, falls into that category of OBDII and has a constant check engine light on, every year I have to clear the codes to get it inspected. Pain in the butt, but car has over 150,000 miles on it and is just broken in. Same with my 92 Dakota, 150,000 miles, 4x4 , ugly and rusty, but I have less than a grand in it and no payments. They are trying to lead us like sheep to get us to buy new every couple of years or for gods sake lease! My brothers truck lease is up in a month or so. They want too much to get him to buy it, and there are NO lease deals out there for a 3/4 ton diesel....................

Clearing the codes doesn't help.........you have to drive the vehicle for x number of miles and take it to speeds above x miles per hour in order to set "trips" that must be there in order to pass. They cleared my stepson's computer and had him drive it 200 miles, but when they connected it back up to BIG BROTHER it again failed for the same 5 sensors. What really doesn't make any sense is that the check engine light has never come on since he purchased the car new, and it runs perfectly. This whole racket is just another way for this fine state we live in to rip us off through automobile repair shops, completely legal for them, and we have no way to fight back.... That is unless people in this state stop buying cars made after '95 but that will never happen in a state where the road salt eats up anything half decent before 6 years anyway. What a bunch of theives!

Joe so you mean the check engine light is off, and the sensors are cleared and still won`t pass? interesting, I think I would take it to another shop for an inspection, someone is out to hose someone.
Never heard of having to take car out over 200 miles to set anything, but nothing suprises me anymore, I have cleared a few car`s codes about a day before inspection, on my Jeep the check engine light light has been staying off for days at a time, but the last time I cleared it my engine light has stayed off

They cleared the codes for the third time and he drove 200 miles again with the same result. He has decided to just get rid of it and buy a new one........... Seems to me like that's just what the car dealers and NYS want. This oppressive inspection fiasco seems to be working out well for everybody except comsumers.

Your whole problem is you are actually listening to that shop. First, test to see if the check engine light actually works. Turn key on without starting it. Does the light come on? If so, that means the light works. Get the codes cleared, then try driving it only 50 miles and then try a different shop. When I do my car, I clear the codes and leave the code reader hooked up. There is a certain amount of mileage before my codes go from "Not Ready" to "Ready". for me usually about 20-25 miles. Once the codes read "ready" then I get it inspected. Usually by about 100 miles the car goes into failure mode again. There is a narrow window of opportunity to get the car inspected without the light coming back on. I've done this the past two years to get the Subaru through inspection. The car you have most likely does have something wrong somewhere, could be a $20 part, could be something more. When you run it 200 miles you are running things full cycle meaning if it can go wrong it will. That's what they want you to do, they want the repair job. But no law says you have to go 200 miles, or says you have to go to the same shop.

with the newer cars..I believe after 98 or so, you can't just disconnect the battery to clear the codes. On an 03 You have to clear them with the box AND cycle the car several times. Cycle means start..drive for at least 10 miles or so..shut off.....repeat steps SEVERAL times. You can leave a gascap off or loose and get a check engine code. mY WIFES 02 MALIBU WITH JUST 70K HAS WATER LEAKING FROM THE intake area and is commoon on chevy's..like 350 motors and the famous 3.1 It's about 800 bucks to fix so I just put some silver solder in it and hope it seals the leak. Sorry to say this but when She does need a new car...it's gonna be foreign. Now lets see...where was this heard before.....um....hmmmm....NEW CARS SUCK !!!

Actualy, once he only drove 70 miles with the same result on the second try. They reset the codes 3 different times. He's also thinking of getting a foreign car this time. Can't say's that I blame him............ ;D

well...all the horror stories about expired inspection stickers...here's one...My Mom let Her inspection lapse for over 6 months. Nothing was sent or done about it. She got Her new inspection yesterday. She had the gray/silver sticker with 2006 and She thought it was good for year past that. Tried to tell Her 4 months ago but She knew better. Haven't the foggiest on what made Her finally get it done. I quit telling Her about it because I wanted to see what the State would do.

Sounds like my partner at work, he went exactly a year before he got his car inspected, when he went to get it inspected they told him he was a year over due, he didn`t know how to read the date either lol, I thought the state would issue a fine, but they didn`t

The one on my van was due in January. I just don't feel like dealing with it right now, although I'm certain it will pass. Good thing is the sticker is the correct color for '07. I'm curious as well to see how big brother is going to handle this when I come rolling in late.

He is incorrect if he failed you for that reason, he owes you an apology for the inconvenience, and a sticker! In NY, 1964 and newer vehicles are required to have seat belts for front passengers. Then 1966 and newer for rear passengers. There is NO requirement for retrofitting your 51 with belts. This guy needs to have his license to inspect suspended for a bit, maybe give him time to re-read the rules. Ask him to show you documentation if he feels he is correct.............in wqriting! By law he is required to have an up to date manual on the premisis in case there are any questions he needs to verify. Let us know how you make out........................If I were you, I would give him a real hard time...........he is ripping you off and you should not have to pay for another inspection.
