When I had my old iron inspected 51 chr, and 53 Ply they were only required to do the safety inspection, and autos before 1965, are not required to have seat belts they were optional in early years, where did you get in inspected? would love to take my 65 Plymouth to him, I don`t have 4-way flashers they were optional equipment in 65, only required on cars sold in New York State, my car was originally from Michigan

I thought they had pending legislation in NY a few years ago that would exempt cars with classic insurance coverage from annual inspection? I guess they decided they would lose too many opportunities to SCREW us!

And yes a 66 import from another state would have to be retrofitted with flashers.

The real problem concerning inspections on old iron is that many of the NYS inspectors of late don't know enough about the laws as they pertain to our cars. Many of them weren't even born yet when these cars were made. I was a licensed inspector during the 80's, and back then I had no idea about pre- 1960 cars........on the rare occasion one came my way, if I had a question I had to ask the neerest old geezer in the shop. Sometimes even they weren't sure. This is 27 years later, and given all that the inspectors of today need to know, cars that come in perhaps once in a lifetime they just don't understand nor really care about. Some of these guys don't even know how to repair drum brakes! That's why it's so important to find a place that is fair to you and stick to it like glue. Lately that's a challenge, b/c many inspection stations gave it up when all this BS started with emissions. The sad part is, these are usually the kind of guys who would cut you some slack.

I started doing inspections back in 73. My first car (driven on the road) back in 72, was a 53 Pontiac. Followed by a 64 T-bird, 66 Dodge Coronet(still have it) and then a succession of Corvairs. I ended up working on a lot of old iron, and even back then when someone brought an out of state car and it didn't have the right equipment, I had to fail them. I ended up being the opne to do plenty of inspections on cars that didn't even have turn signals or only one tail light. Once had a car come in that had kerosene lights...........I didn't make him light them, nor did I check their aim..................was enjoyable just to look it over.

Bike Builders have been going thru the same crap. South Side Kustoms is a registered builder meaning - you get a VIN# from us. Along with that NTSA and The D.O.T. send us a list of requirements by state of what each bike needs to be street legal (i.e. Brake lights/directions/mirrors/etc.) Well in NY State it is only required to have a left side mirror brake light at the 7 oclock to 9 oclock position on the rear of the bike and directionals at the 3 oclock to 5 oclock position and 7 oclock to 9 oclock position. Winner of the charity bike last year goes to have bike inspected, it won't pass, (granted he took it to a couple of Honda dealers) ends up taking it to a local shop, he passes it (Steve's Cycle's--plug for him). Dealerships wouldn't pass it because it didn't have front directionals. Even though I have paperwork saying NONE NEEDED ON FRONT. The last year the EPA approval buzz started in the motorcycle community. It started with bike builders who build less then 25 bikes a year were going to be exempt from the laws, but no one could answer us well does the 25th only have to be EPA ok or then all 25? Granted they still don't know how they are going to govern this situation. MOST motorcycles don't have an onboard computer to plug into. So finally now the EPA decides OK---we'll make the motor manufactures and aftermarket parts manufactures get certified, and this has to be done by 2008. A couple of motors like S&S and Revtech are already EPA OK, but now even aftermarket exhaust guys have to get their pipes ok'd to sell, which the testing costs anywhere from $1,500 -$3,000 a session. HOW MUCH SMOG is a motorcycle generating? ? I could see an oil burning drip nasty basket case failing but a new or custom failing because it isn't EPA certified? Here is one famous example some of you might already know of...West Coast Choppers was fined a 1/4 of a Million dollars for it's bikes not being EPA ok, When Jesse said ok--well I'll make the updates to the bikes (something like 20 from 99 to present) The state of California didn't wanted to hear it--just for him to pay up. WTF? ?? Jesus at $3.00 a gallon, looks like most of us will only be able to afford to drive bikes or scooters soon anyways. Ok that is my rant---please drive thru!
