looks like it shorted out and the fuse didn`t blow, causing a fire

did it have the oil caps on the ends? Some may overheat and burn out if you don't oil them................
I know the one on my Corvair rampside has those oil caps.

I'm not too familiar with early 6 volt electrical systems, but perhaps you have a short somewhere? If your battery isn't draining dead them it may have been an internal short in the generator itself.
Look very closely at the wiring........it may be that the output wire coming from the generator itself is shorting out to ground either from a pinched wire or bad insulation. Wire also could have melted on a hot exhaust and caused a short that way too. Is your generator still under some kind of warranty?

I had an oil cap on my 51 Chrysler`s generator also, it was the first year for Chrysler`s power steering, that was drivin off the generator, kind of neat looking and worked great. back then they had a lot more lubrication points

the armature exploded took out the field coils and the front bearing

I would suggest that you also check the regulator. Points (contacts) inside the regulator may have welded closed (or other problems within the regulator) causing the generator to run wide open thereby promoting overheating.
Along with the other possibilities* already mentioned, it is also possible that the battery has an internal short in a cell causing an overload (the battery's normal internal resistance drops way down causing the current going into it to increase dramatically) but then you would probably have noticed hard starting.
*A bad bearing in a generator can cause the armature to rub the field laminates quickly causing terrific overheating and dramatic self destruction.
Good luck in finding the cause.

Did the generator short out the regulator when it went bad?

the armature exploded took out the field coils and the front bearing That's very odd that the front bearing is gone. Perhaps that was the original problem? You'd be surprised how much heat can be generated from a bearing that seizes up when being driven by 100+ horsepower! I totally destroyed my a/c compressor like that one day coming back home from Akron.....I kept hearing this wierd noise just before it happened.......loud squeel and then instant smoke just started pouring out.......I thought my engine was on fire......it wound up being a seized pulley bearing in my a/c compressor. It destroyed the fan belts and melted itself all together just as if it was welded. The thing was still glowing red and crackling when I opened my hood! I couldn't even get it apart when I got home, I had to replace the whole compressor. The force from the belts pulling it even pushed the water pump bearing deeper into the pump! I had to replace that too. How is your fan belt? Does it look fryed? Did you hear any strange noises just before this happened to you? I'd look things over on your car very carefully if it were me......
