WON`T BE LONG BEFORE NEW YORK STATE FOLLOWS
The state may soon pay drivers of old cars to get it off the road in a program to improve air quality.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality program targets Travis and Williamson counties, in addition to others across the state.
A car must be at least 10 years old to be eligible.
Those who qualify will receive a voucher for $3,000 to replace the car with a new vehicle. Drivers can receive $3,500 if they purchase a hybrid.
"This entire process is designed to get these older cars off the road and off the road forever," said Bob Wierzowiecki of the TCEQ air quality division. "In doing so, we will get a newer car, a cleaner car with much less emissions, and we clean the air in Texas."
The program is scheduled to start in December.

Not to bad, I wait a couple more years to trade my buick in....a additional 3000 downpayment works for me. This would benifit people that drive the wheels off the car, then trade it in and take over the older car and give the new one to teh wife works well for me.

These scrappage programs are generally paid for by industrial donors who "buy" pollution credits by setting up these scrappage programs, They get out of fixing their pollution by off setting it by getting rid of old cars. They save millions, and a lot of good old cars get crushed. What is not taken into consideration is the amount of resources and the pollution created by making a new car.................................. All smoke and mirrors............................
Or worse.............the taxpayer is footing the bill, and those who are not well off find themselves without affordable wheels because now any junker is worth 3 grand! More people on the welfare roles because they cannot afford a way to work.
And a bunch of geniuses in the legislature will think this is a great idea!

3 grand for some junk, then trade in value plus what you can save couple be a nice downpayment...better then zero down.t get 3 grand for some junk is good. the ones that are collectable people will save and still sell for more in parts or a roller ...people just don't trade in 69 gto's anymore guys, they sell them. I think this will affect only cars like buick centuries , contours escorts....just your daily driven, uncollectable cars...

I think it will spread into New York state also, the big corporations are blaming all the pollution problems on the little guy

They've already been doing this in California, and tried to get it going in NY already. The UAW is all for it as it eliminates vehicles and possibly can help keep jobs. More BS! I remember reading articles of a Camaro and a Roadrunner being scrapped in California. And you can bet there will be some Belvederes scrapped as well, which could have yielded restoration parts for a Roadrunner. (or made into a clone). Nothing good can come of this.....................

it will not impact the antique/classic cars worth any money...only the dummies would scrap a serviceable or restorable car 74 on down...PLUS....California MAY have a 12 month season for these old polluting beasts..but obviously NY has a slightly shorter season....They could make a start and end date for the cars to be on the road, but I doubt they're that smart...or stupid

So from what I can determine from Ray's original post, this is completely voluntary? If that's the case, then it is a good idea. I'd easliy take $3000 for the POS Sundace I just bought.
