but then again in the 50s they also used hearses as ambulances, so anything could of been an ambulance

I'm pretty sure the same companies that did the conversions did both hearses an ambulances. didnt flxible corp do a lot of the GMs?
Years ago I almost bought a 53 Pontiac hearse. It was at a junkyard in Sandhill, and had a running motor. I still had my original 53 pontiac 2-dr, with a torn apart motor. Between the 2 of them I could have made one...........Hearse had better body, and interior and a running drivetrain, front suspension was twisted underneath, most likely a ball joint let go. But I thought the hears would have been weird.....................

I always liked the looks of the station wagon type ambulances, and they rode nice. I think that was the reason I wanted to be a Paramedic. A company called Miller-Meteor built most of the hearses and ambulance bodys in the 70s. In the late 70s the dept of health made some changes to what an ambulance is supposed to carry, its the section 800 of the Dept of Health, this killed the station wagon type ambulances, they had no room, also the DOH made up new specs for ambulances, such as a patient on a back board or a stretcher has to able to exit from a side door if necessary, that was the final nail for the old type ambulances, thats why you see all these huge ambulances.
