Plans for a new hotel in Clarence - the first in the town in several decades - should clear their final hurdle just after Election Day.
The Clarence Town Board, during its Nov. 7 meeting, is expected to approve plans for a 98-room Staybridge Inn and an adjoining restaurant on the site of the former, long-closed Sheridan Court Motel. The motel is located at the corner of Sheridan Drive and Transit Road, north of Eastern Hills Mall.
The plan is being advanced by Scott Enterprises of Erie, Pa., a hospitality development firm whose holdings include Splash Lagoon, a popular indoor waterpark in Erie. The multimillion-dollar project is Scott Enterprise's first in the immediate Buffalo Niagara region.
The company acquired the property earlier this year for $1.4 million, according to public documents. The deal was brokered by Richard Roller from CB Richard Ellis Buffalo.
Plans call for a three-story hotel to be constructed on the site, along with a restaurant that could approach 8,000 square feet. The hotel, according to project architect Jerry Young from Young & Wright Architects of Buffalo, would include an indoor swimming pool, sauna, hot tub, an outdoor sports court that could be used for either tennis or basketball and an outdoor barbecue pit and dining area.
Young said plans also call for a future expansion of 30 more rooms for the hotel.
Scott Enterprises is considering putting a Steak 'N Shake or a Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in the outparcel. A typical Steak 'N Shake has approximately 4,500 square feet; the Quaker Steak & Lube runs about 8,000 square feet. The Clarence site would be the first local operation for either of those chain restaurants.
Pending the final Clarence Town Board approval, Young said work on the project could begin later this month, beginning with the demolition of the Sheridan Court Motel. The hotel and restaurant are slated to open next summer.
