Some of these guys get downright serious about it. Subframed, full cage, fuel cell. etc..... In their day they were very competitive on the SCCA circuit. And a lot of the enthusiasts today still race them on tracks. During the Buffalo Convention, they had a side trip and track time up at Mosport near Toronto. Northeast Corvair Council puts on a track day at Lime Rock every year. There are still a few who show up every year at the Vintage races at Watkins Glen. You would not believe the speed parts available for these........... Not bad for a car long out of production. Say what you will about them but they do handle like a slot car, and even that can be improved over stock specs. I enjoy the autocross myself, I've even ran the Van in that. In 2008 we are working on track time at Kelly's Go Cart track along with a BMW club.
There's a guy out there now that drag races a turbocharged Corvair running an automatic that lifts the front end. He spools up the turbo against the stall of the torque converter and does some pretty quick times......................
