If someone builds a kit car or t bucket, when they go register it what kind of TAX do they have to pay at the DMV? Or have they paid the tax because the bought the car and already charged sales tax. I think of some strange stuff at times....Any Ideas?

I would think you would have to bring in all your receipts to show how much money you have in to the car. But who knows in this state what they require.

I remember when I regestered the Riv after putting it back together. It was off the road for almost 5 years. They wanted me to have it weighed first.......I argued with the supervisor and told her the weight was on the old registration. After wasting 1/2 hour of my time they finally wound up seeing things my way. I'm convinced those bureaucrats at the DMV office just make their own rules when they don't know something.

I know the kit cars need a weight, I`m suprised they wanted your car weighed, it was registered before in NY state wasn`t it? my car has been off the road since 1988, and was almost junked, first time for a NY state registration, so I did need a weight, I used the weight the NADA guide had listed.

When I transferred a vehicle from another state, most out of state titles do not have the weight on the title but the DMV just uses a chart and puts it in. Never had a car weight issue there.

I guess you would be the one to know, you must be at the DMV way to much with the cars you buy and sell.

Ok, so you build a kit car, lets say a cobra. You get it on the scale and go to the dmv.....is there a tax to be paid or just register it?

Of course NY has to get its cut, In order for a new owner to register the vehicle in their name, they will need to prove to the NY DMV that a transaction (sale of a vehicle) has taken place between a seller and a buyer. Need a bill of sale, this will determine the tax, then the weight will determine the registration cost

It's also needed to be inspected to assure road worthiness and all applicable safety devices are installed. Of course there is tax to be paid. It's like dying...can't avoid it

I would say where ever you get the frame, use that for your receite,
Maybe i`m wrong but here is the way I feel
EXAMPLE: You buy a VW frame, put a dune buggy body on it, its still a VW
